Việt Nam, Brazil look to elevate bilateral ties: ambassador

VIETNAM, May 9 - BUENOS AIRES — The Vietnamese Embassy in Brazil recently organised a ceremony to mark the 35th anniversary of the Việt Nam – Brazil diplomatic relations, the 70th anniversary of the Điện Biên Phủ Victory, and President Hồ Chí Minh’s 134 birthday.

In his speech at the event, Ambassador Bùi Văn Nghị affirmed that 2024 is a significant year as both nations resolve to elevate their relations to a new high which is manifested through exchanges of high-level delegations, effective dialogues, and enhanced cooperation in various channels of party, state, parliamentary and people-to-people diplomacy, and across the domains of agriculture, science-technology, culture, semiconductor, aviation, sports and tourism.

He stressed that Brazil, the largest economy in South America, is the leading trade partner of Việt Nam in the region.

Recalling the time when Vietnamese young man Nguyễn Tất Thành (then President Hồ Chí Minh) set his foot in Rio de Janeiro in 1912 in his journey to seek ways for national salvation, Nghị said that during his six-month stay in the city, he studied the life of the Brazilian workers.

The authority of Rio de Janeiro state has been interested in President Hồ Chí Minh’s journey there, and will join hands with the Vietnamese side to arrange events to commemorate the revolutionary leader, he stressed.

On the occasion, Nghị sent his condolences to the Brazilian state over the losses in both human lives and assets caused by massive floods.

Meanwhile, President of the Brazil-Việt Nam Friendship Association and Deputy Minister of Science, Technology and Innovation Ignacio Arruda described 2024 as an important milestone for the two countries to organise activities to mark their diplomatic ties, implement signed agreements and commitments, and bolster coordination at multilateral forums in a more practical and effective fashion.

Arruda underlined that Brazil will promote the implementation of a commemorative project that marks President Hồ Chí Minh’s journey in the Brazilian city, adding a group of experts will come to Việt Nam to roll out a cooperative project with the Ministry of Science and Technology in this second quarter.
