A new collaboration revives Marithé + François Girbaud’s iconic denim designs with a modern twist.
The French fashion house, founded by designers François Girbaud and Marithé Bachellerie in 1972, has joined forces with U.S. streetwear giant Supreme for a highly anticipated Spring 2025 capsule collection. The collection is available on Thursday in most places and in Asia on April 5.
Marithé + François Girbaud’s signature denim designs anchor the collection. Styles include denim jackets and the X-seam baggy jeans offered in washed black, ecru and raw denim. The X-seam denim short is also offered in stonewash—a reference to Marithé + François Girbaud’s pioneering pre-washed denim when they would wash imported dark blue denim at local laundromats in the 1960s to soften, shrink and fade denim.
The bottom constructions also pay homage to Marithé + François Girbaud’s first baggy jean in 1978 and the X-pocket construction the designers developed in 1981 and worn by the likes of Michael Jordan. By shifting pockets lower on the body, the designers developed a “refined silhouette that broke radically from traditional American 5-pocket jeans,” Supreme stated.
Black and camouflage leather bomber jackets, leather cargo pants, hockey jerseys, puffer vests, hooded sweatshirts, sweatpants, tees, hats and crossbody bags are also part of the collection.
The collaboration with Supreme is a departure from Marithé + François Girbaud’s recent efforts to revive the legacy brand. Last year, South Korean company Layer announced an exclusive licensing agreement in Asia, delivering collections that bring a modern and minimalist sensibility to the brand’s unique heritage.
Separately, Marithé + François Girbaud relaunched in France in 2023 with an emphasis on logo sweats, T-shirts, leggings and baseball caps, and a trio of boutiques called fitting rooms. The stores are designed to explore, try on, and pre-order collections.
In other news, Supreme is also teaming with office furniture manufacturer Knoll to reimagine the Bauhaus-era Barcelona chair. The famous was designed by Mies van der Rohe in 1929 and is manufactured by Knoll in the U.S.
Supreme’s version of the Barcelona features cushions covered with 23 oz. Japanese selvedge denim and has embossed denim logos.
