Vancouver’s home furnishings and décor scene just got a tad more competitive, thanks to the arrival of Montreal-based retailer Structube.

The store, located at 140 West Hastings Street, is the first West Coast location for the family-owned business. It specializes in contemporary furnishings and décor items at affordable price-points—a quality made even more apparent due to a recent slashing of tags.

“Our designs are more accessible to a wider audience,” said Tony Trew, Structube’s director of marketing, during a media tour of the space. “So we’ve actually dropped quite a few of our prices…and all of our newer items, we’re bringing them in at a lower price-point.”  

From tufted loveseats to Eames-like office chairs to rustic, solid-wood headboards, a range of décor styles are showcased in the 8,000-square-foot shop. The majority of the pieces are made internationally in countries such as Portugal, India, and the U.S., and require assembly upon purchase.

Sofas start at $499; large dining tables at $199; and office furniture at $149, for example. Lighting fixtures, mirrors, and tableware, plus a selection of compact, condo-friendly furnishings, are also part of the stock.

Structube has plans to open locations in Burnaby and on South Granville later this year. The price drops, Trew notes, puts Structube “head to head” with a certain Swedish retailer—but a little friendly competition never hurt anybody, right?
